Transformative Education Is Essential For Our Youth And Our World.

Living Learning Labs, also known as L3 Labs, are contextual places and spaces of learning that can be found anywhere, beyond traditional classrooms.

Each L3 Lab edition has a specific thematic focus, such as climate change, waste, food security, or energy. The Spekboom edition is a learner and teacher resource kit.

L3 Labs are based on the values of Ubuntu and offer Ubuntu-led Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Sustainability requires everyone to care for themselves, their fellow human beings, and the world, including future generations.

L3 Labs provide opportunities for transgressive, experiential, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and innovative teaching and learning, and enable the integration of learning across disciplines and subject mastery.

L3 Labs are rooted in the values of Ubuntu and offer Ubuntu-led Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

Ubuntu is a term that refers to the interconnectedness of all people and things, and the importance of compassion, respect, and community. Ubuntu-led ESD promotes transgressive, experiential, and ethics-led learning that is self-liberating and contributes to sustainable development.

SPEKBOOM laboratory

Spekboom: The succulent superhero fighting climate change and restoring degraded spaces.

Spekboom, a succulent native to South Africa, is becoming popular as a response to climate change due to its ability to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Its small, fleshy leaves store water, making it drought-tolerant, and it is adaptable to various conditions. Spekboom is also edible and easy to grow and maintain, making it valuable for ecological restoration.

The Spekboom Laboratory at each school uses Spekboom hedges to create a micro-ecosystem, acting as a natural barrier to minimize water run-off and providing opportunities for outdoor teaching and learning. It allows learners and teachers to restore degraded spaces and show agency in tackling climate change and community beautification.

VERTICAL GARDENS laboratory

Vertical gardening in greenhouses is the perfect solution for urban Living Labs

Vertical gardening is a method of growing plants vertically, making it ideal for limited spaces in urban areas. It includes trellises, tower gardens, hanging baskets, and living walls, and offers benefits such as space maximization, aesthetic appeal, easy maintenance, and improved air quality.

Combining vertical gardens with enclosed greenhouses enhances these benefits, improving food production and providing laboratory-like conditions for greater control over growth variables. Therefore, vertical gardens in greenhouses are ideal for Living Labs, offering outdoor teaching and learning spaces. Each school will run a vertical garden in a greenhouse to provide these benefits.

The Earth Worm Laboratory

Transforming waste into nutrient-rich compost with Earth Worm Living Lab for schools.

The Earth Worm Living Lab involves keeping earthworms in an enclosed container to produce nutrient-rich compost that can be used to fertilize plants and gardens. Earthworms consume organic waste and turn it into castings rich in nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

This method helps reduce waste, improves soil health, and promotes sustainability. The living lab allows one to study earthworms, compost properties, and their impact on plant growth and health. Each school can start its earthworm farm to reduce waste and provide laboratory-like conditions.

LIVING LEARNING LABS

Each L3 LAB edition will have a specific thematic focus

Climate Change, Carbon Sequestration & Regeneration
Food security and food gardens
Waste, regeneration, composting & earth worms
Energy, solar power and Cell-phone chargers
