VERTICAL GARDENS LAB

Vertical gardening in greenhouses: the perfect urban solution.

“Vertical gardening in greenhouses maximizes urban space and offers improved air quality, easy maintenance, and outdoor learning in Living Labs for optimal food production and sustainability.”

Vertical gardening grows plants vertically, rather than horizontally on the ground. It maximizes limited space, especially in urban areas. When combined with enclosed gardens There are different types of vertical gardening, including:

01

Trellises and walls:

These structures support climbing plants, such as beans, peas, and tomatoes, and provide protection against some elements of weather like wind, sun, and rain.

02

Tower gardens:

These are vertical structures with multiple layers of planters that allow you to grow a variety of plants in a small area. They are normally used with specific growth mediums and combined with fertilizers.

03

Hanging baskets:

These are baskets that are suspended from walls or ceilings and can be used to grow a variety of plants. Same as 2.

04

Living walls:

These are vertical gardens that are attached to walls and can be used to grow a variety of plants, including herbs, vegetables, and flowers. This combines the benefits of walls and tower gardens but are normally more complex to construct and more expensive to maintain.

Vertical gardening has several benefits:

When vertical gardens are combined with enclosed greenhouses, it enhances the benefits of the vertical garden. From the perspective of the Living Labs, it improves food production and provide more laboratory-like conditions as it provides greater control over some variables that influences plant growth such as wind (airflow and damage), sun (light and energy), rain (humidity) and enemies and pests.

  • For this reason, vertical gardens in greenhouses are perfect examples of what a Living Lab is and can be.

  • Each school will put up and run a vertical garden in a greenhouse. In addition to the benefits listed above, it also provides an outdoor teaching and learning space.
